Tour de France for automobiles 1960

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1960 Tour de France for automobiles was a stage race for automobiles from September 15 to 23 in France , Belgium and Germany .

The race

As in the previous year, the Tour Auto also went to Belgium in 1960. Again, Spa was the goal of the first stage. 116 participants started in Nice on September 15th and had to drive another special stage on Mont Ventoux during the first stage . Over 1680 km and four stages, the tour led to Biarritz , where the race was the first to finish. The drivers had to contest 14 special stages, more than ever before. Including mountain races on the Puy de Dôme and the Col du Tourmalet as well as lap races at the Nürburgring , in Montlhéry , Spa-Francorchamps and Rouen-les-Essarts .

As in 1959, the two Ferrari factory drivers Willy Mairesse and Olivier Gendebien fought a tough battle, which was decided by a piston damage to Gendebien's Ferrari 250 GT during the third stage. In the touring car class, Bernard Consten won with co-driver Jack Renel in a Jaguar Mark II . Soisbault / Cancre won the women's championship in the sports car class in a Porsche 356B S90 . No women's team crossed the finish line in the touring car class.
