The 1951 Tour de France for automobiles was a stage race for automobiles from August 30 to September 12 in France .

The race

It was not until late in the autumn of 1950 that those in charge of the French automobile club decided to hold the Tour Auto again for the first time since the Second World War . Late in so far as at this point in time all of the major races in Europe that had been interrupted by the war were already being held again. The Mille Miglia was reintroduced as early as 1947, the Targa Florio in 1948 and since 1949 the 24-hour race has been back at Le Mans . In 1950 , the Formula 1 world championship for monoposto vehicles was also introduced.

The tour started in Nice and led back to Nice over 5239 km and six stages. There were 97 teams of two at the start, 77 of which crossed the finish line. The overall standings were won by the French duo Pierre Boncompagni and Alfred Barraquet, who led a triple victory for Ferrari . The women’s standings were won by the Hammersly sisters in a Peugeot 203 , who finished fortieth in the overall standings.

The French automobile pioneer Jules Goux , who was the first European to win the Indianapolis 500 mile race in 1913 , also took part. With his wife as co-driver, he finished 25th in the overall standings.
