Tour de France for automobiles 1972
The 1972 Tour de France for automobiles , also known as the Tour de France , was held as a stage race for automobiles from September 15 to 24 in France , Belgium and Spain .
The race
As in the previous year, the Tour Auto special stages were held in three countries. The race started this year in Biarritz and led over eight sections and the stage locations Barcelona , Albi , Vichy , Le Mans , Le Touquet , Flaine and Bandol to Nice . 97 teams had to cover 4950 km, 36 reached the finish in southern France. The 18 special stages included circuit races on the race tracks of Nogaro , Barcelona , Albi , Clermont-Ferrand , Magny-Cours , Le Mans , Rouen , Nivelles , Dijon and Le Castellet .
The favorites of the race were the two Ferrari Daytonas driven by Jean-Claude Andruet and Vic Elford . Gérard Larrousse in a Ford Capri 2600RS and Jean-Luc Thérier in an Alpine A110 had outsider opportunities . Of these four drivers, only Andruet remained at the end of the race, who won the race. As in the previous year, the women’s classification went to Marie-Claude Charmasson , who finished fifth in the overall classification with new co-driver Christine Giganot in a Chevrolet Corvette .
