Tour de France for automobiles 1958

The 1958 Tour de France for automobiles was held as a stage race for automobiles from September 15 to 21 in France .

The race

The Tour Auto started as in previous years, in Nice and led the 113 participants - 37 of them reached the finish line - km over 5935 and four stages to Pau . The race was overshadowed by the fatal accident of British top driver Peter Whitehead . Whitehead, who shared a Jaguar D-Type with his half-brother Graham , was sitting in the passenger seat when the Jaguar slipped off the track on September 21, just before the end of the race and at the beginning of the night, and fell into a ravine. While Graham was seriously injured, Peter was killed.

The race, which was extended as in the previous year into two classes, was again the duel between the two Ferrari pilots Olivier Gendebien and Maurice Trintignant coined. The victory went to the Belgian team Gendebien / Bianchi . The overall ranking of the touring car class went to Jean Hébert and Bernard Consten in an Alfa Romeo Giulietta . The women’s standings in the GT class went to Ferrier / Paolozzi, who finished twelfth in the overall standings in a Porsche 356 . Archambault / Pare (Alfa Romeo Giulietta - 15th overall) remained successful in the touring car class.
