The 1974 Tour de France for automobiles , also known as the Tour de France , was held as a stage race for automobiles from September 13 to 21 in France .

The race

For the first time , a prologue was contested at the Tour Auto in 1974 , analogous to the bike race , to determine the starting order. However, the prologue of the racing drivers was 145 km long and, after the start in Tabres , also included a mountain test on the Col du Tourmalet . The race itself also began in Tarbes and ran over six stages and from Deauville , Troyes , Dijon , Vichy and Rodez to Nice. The length of the route was massively shortened and comprised 3526 km. Of the 87 starters, 42 reached the finish line after eight days of racing. Of the 14 special stages, seven were circuit races on the racing slopes of Nogaro , Le Mans , Croix-en-Ternois, Dijon , Magny-Cours , Clermont-Ferrand , Karland and Le Castellet .

The race developed into a duel between the works Lancia Stratos against two works Ligier JS2s . After the failure of last year's winner Sandro Munari , who had been in the lead for a long time , there was a Ligier double victory. The women’s classification was won by Marianne Hoepfner on an Alpine A310 , which with her co-pilot Marie Laurent was 13th overall.
