Tour de France for automobiles 1983

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1983 Tour de France for automobiles was held as a stage race for automobiles from September 19 to 23 in France .

In 1983 the Tour Auto was not only part of the French rally championship, but also part of the European rally championship. The event started this year in Paris and took the 84 participants to southern France. 37 of them reached the destination in Nice .

Most of the top French drivers were at the start. The favorite was Bernard Béguin , who drove a BMW M1 . The three Renault factory drivers Jean Ragnotti , Bruno Saby and François Chatriot competed in their Renault 5 Turbos . Jean-Claude Andruet and Bernard Darniche started the fast factory Lancia rallies . There was also Guy Fréquelin , who drove an Opel Manta 400 .

Beguin led from the start - only Ragnotti could follow him - and already looked like the sure winner when he got 40 penalty minutes after the third stage because he passed a checkpoint too late after a mistake by his co-pilot. With that he fell hopelessly behind. Almost at the same time, Ragnotti dropped out due to a technical defect. The victory thus went to Guy Fréquelin.
