The pupa is almost black with a shiny surface and only very faint bluish tires.

Geographical occurrence and habitat

Muschampia tessellum is distributed from the southern Balkan Peninsula ( Macedonia , Bulgaria , Greece and the European part of Turkey ) via the Ukraine , southern Russia (north to the region around Moscow) and Asia Minor , southern Siberia , Mongolia eastwards to the Amurland . The species occurs in sunny, only moderately dry, extensively used pasture landscapes, at altitudes between 500 and 1600 m above sea level.

Way of life

The moths in Europe fly from late May to mid-August, with a peak in early June in a generation. In the Altai , the moths were observed from May to July. The caterpillar feeds on fire herbs ( phlomis ). So far only Phlomis samia has been confirmed for Greece and Phlomis tuberosa for the southern Urals . The species overwinters as an L2 or possibly as an L3 caterpillar.
