The 1971 Tour de France for automobiles , also known as the XVIe Tour de France Automobile , was held as a stage race for automobiles from September 17th to 25th in France , Germany and Spain .

The race

In 1971 the Tour Auto comprised seven stages with a total of 20 special stages. For the first time one of these tests was carried out on Spanish territory. The tour started in Nice - the traditional starting point of the 1950s - and led back to the Côte d'Azur via Bandol , Albi , Le Mans Reims , Vichy and Uriage . The participants - 49 of the 95 starters reached the finish in Nice - had to cover 5089 kilometers. Special tests were also held on racetracks, among other places. In 1971 there were races at Le Castellet , the Circuit de Montjuïc , the Circuit d'Albi , the permanent Le Mans race track , in Montlhéry and on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring .

As in the previous year, favorites were the Matra MS650 . The strongest opponents were a Ferrari 512M from the Spanish racing team Escuderia Montjuïc and a Ford GT70 used by Ford Germany . Gérard Larrousse secured the overall victory in the Matra. The women's category won Marie-Claude Charmasson and Martine de la Gran Drive on a Chevrolet Camaro Z28 , who finished 18 rank in the overall standings.
