The eleventh 1000 km race in Paris , also 1000 Kilometres de Paris, Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry , took place on October 17, 1971 at the Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry . The race was the 14th round of the French Circuit Championship this year.

The race

For the team of John Wyer was World Sportscar Championship in 1971 run highly successful. The Porsche 917K fielded by the team celebrated five victories of the season and thus remained successful in half of the championship races. At the end of the 1971 season, however, the special regulation for five-liter sports cars expired. As of the 1972 sports car with a 5-liter engine as the Porsche 917, which were Ferrari 512 , the Lola T70 or the Ford GT40 not for the World Sportscar Championship the FIA admitted. For Wyer, this also meant the end of the collaboration with Porsche .

The Wyer team used the 1000 km race in Paris as the conclusion of the successful partnership. Chassis # 034 => 013 was selected as the vehicle. This year, this car has already won the Daytona 24-hour race , the Monza 1000 km race and the Zeltweg 1000 km race . The car was driven by Derek Bell and Gijs van Lennep . Two other Porsche 917s were Spyder. One, driven by Gérard Larrousse and Leo Kinnunen , was reported by a Finnish team. The second Spyder that a German team brought to Montlhéry was driven by Helmut Marko and Michael Weber .

The fastest training time was achieved by Helmut Marko in the 917 Spyder, which achieved a time of 2: 30.500 minutes. He was 0.2 seconds faster than Jean-Pierre Beltoise in the Matra-Simca MS660 . From the formation lap came Henri Pescarolo , the one Alfa Romeo T33 / TT / 3 went to walk back. On the wet road, he lost control of the car and was unable to continue driving after an accident. At the beginning, Beltoise dominated the race in the Matra. After the first lap, he was seven seconds ahead of the competition. The Frenchman was able to extend his lead up to 27 seconds, then the track dried up and the Porsches were able to catch up.

On the now dry road, Marko took the lead in the Spyder, which he held until it failed due to an overheated engine. Chris Amon retired from the Matra after a gearbox failure, after Beltoise had fallen far behind after a collision. At the end of the race the Wyer-Porsche had a comfortable lead of five laps over the Spyder by Larrousse and Kinnunen.
