Tour de France for automobiles 1962

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1962 Tour de France for automobiles was a stage race for automobiles from September 15 to 23 in France and Belgium .

The race

For the first time since the race was reintroduced in 1951 , the Tour Auto was not started in Nice , but in Rouen . The stage destinations of the five sections were Tours , Toulouse , Nice, the Belgian Spa and Reims , where the tour ended on September 23. 116 participants took up the 5979 km race, 46 of them reached the finish. 14 special stages had to be completed, including mountain and circuit races .

Ferrari had developed a new Gran Tursimo racing car , the Ferrari 250 GTO , which was also to become the defining racing car in the GT class on the Tour. But the fastest GTO, with Jo Schlesser at the wheel and former ski racer Henri Oreiller as co-driver, lost 54 minutes in a slip on the special stage in Le Mans . The duo had to be content with second place in the overall standings. The two GTOs of Carlo-Maria Abate and Edgar Berney failed due to technical defects and Lucien Bianchi lost his chance to win after an accident with a milk truck. André Simon celebrated a surprise victory in his Ferrari 250 GT . It was the seventh overall victory in a row for a Ferrari 250GT.

In the touring car class, Bernard Consten led a phalanx of four Jaguar Mark IIs and celebrated his third overall victory in a row. The two British ladies Rosemary Smith and Rosemary Sears won the women's touring car class on a Sunbeam Rapier and finished twelfth in the overall classification. No women's team was included in the GT class.
