Tour de France for automobiles 1973
The 1973 Tour de France for automobiles , also known as the Tour de France , was held as a stage race for automobiles from September 14 to 22 in France and Spain .
The race
The Tour Auto was started again in Nice in 1973 and led back to Nice over five sections and the stage locations Clermont-Ferrand , Lille , Albi and Biarritz . The organizers shortened the special stages to 17 and decided not to go to the Nürburgring this year . However, the circuit race at the Circuit de Montjuïc in Barcelona remained in the program . As in previous years, the races on racetracks also included mountain tests and the participants had to cover a total of 5500 km. 77 teams started the race on September 14th, 32 of them were able to finish eight days later.
In that year the organizers opened the competition for Group 5 vehicles, which meant that the works Lancia Stratos and the Ligier JS2 were eligible to compete . The overall victory went to the Italian rally driver Sandro Munari . Munari was the first non-French overall winner since the Belgian Lucien Bianchi in 1964. As in the previous two years, the women's standings were secured by French Marie-Claude Charmasson , who this year drove an Opel Commodore GSE and came twelfth in the overall standings .
