Marcel Detienne

Marcel Detienne (born October 11, 1935 in Liège , Belgium; † March 21, 2019 in Nemours , France) was a Belgian religious scholar , classical philologist , historical anthropologist and cultural comparator. He was Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve Professor of Classics at Johns Hopkins University and, together with Jean-Pierre Vernant and Pierre Vidal-Naquet, founded the so-called École de Paris of historical anthropology.

Life

Detienne was awarded a doctorate in religieuses at the École des Hautes Études in 1960 and a doctorate in philosophie et lettres from the University of Liège in 1965 . In 1964 he founded the Center de recherches comparées sur les sociétés anciennes in Paris with Vernant and Vidal-Naquet . In 1975 Detienne was appointed directeur d'études en sciences religieuses at the École pratique des Hautes Études , where he taught until 1998. From 1992 until his retirement, Detienne also held the Chair of Classical Philology in the Department of Classics at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore .

Starting from structuralism Claude Lévi-Strauss ' Detienne has developed first a historical anthropology of the classical and archaic Greece, but later the comparatistic emphasizes perspective that both other cultures considered in comparison investigated and the cultural studies act of comparing.
