Derek Hill

Derek John Hill (born March 28, 1975 in Santa Monica , California ) is a retired American automobile racing driver . He is the son of Formula 1 world champion Phil Hill .

Career

Like most motorsport enthusiasts , Hill began his career in karting , where he was active from 1990 to 1994. In 1995 he was runner-up in the US Ferrari Challenge and champion of the US Barber Formula Dodge . In 1996 Hill decided to focus on formula racing and switched to the Barber Dodge Pro Series . The American won a race and finished the season in third place. In 1997 he stayed in this series and won the Barber Dodge Pro Series championship with four wins. In 1998 he started in Formula Atlantic and finished 13th in the overall standings.

In 1999 Hill moved to Europe and initially competed in the Formula Palmer Audi . He finished 19th overall. In 2000 he switched to the Italian Formula 3000 . He started six of eight races in this championship and remained without points.

2001 Hill switched to the international Formula 3000 championship for the French DAMS team. While his teammate Sébastien Bourdais took fourth place in the championship with a win, Hill remained with a ninth place as the best result without points and ended the season in 24th place overall. In 2002 the US-American was initially without a cockpit and switched to the Italian racing team Durango Formula for the sixth race of the season as a replacement for Alexander Müller . He was again without points and finished 17th overall. In 2003 Hill contested his third season in Formula 3000 for Super Nova Racing. At the Nürburgring he achieved his only point placement in Formula 3000 in fifth. After the sixth race he was replaced by Nicolas Kiesa and at the end of the season he finished 16th Place in the overall ranking.

After he had contested a race in the American Le Mans Series in 2004, he did not participate in any major racing series.

Others

From 2002 Derek Hill was managed by Brigitte Hill, daughter of Formula 1 world champion Graham Hill and sister of Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill . The two Hill racing families are not related to each other.
