Reports
background
The event took place in the framework of the German Grand Prix .
After the race at Silverstone , Stefano Coletti led the drivers' standings with 22 points ahead of Felipe Nasr and 31 points ahead of Sam Bird . Carlin led the team standings with five points ahead of Russian Time and nine points ahead of Rapax .
No driver had previously won a GP2 race at the Nürburgring.
training
Robin Frijns set the fastest time in free practice , followed by Bird and Mitch Evans .
Qualifying
In qualifying, the DAMS drivers were the fastest. Stéphane Richelmi secured pole position in front of Marcus Ericsson and Frijns. For Richelmi this was the first pole position in the GP2 series.
Main race
Richelmi didn't start perfectly and lost the lead to his teammate Ericsson. Evans got off to a good start and was entertaining ahead of Ericsson, but braked late into the first corner and had to drive through the gravel, whereupon he dropped back to 16th position. While Nasr and Frijns were fighting for third place, there was a safety car phase and Frijns placed behind Nasr. The trigger for the safety car phase was a start-up accident: Adrian Quaife-Hobbs had stalled the engine and could not move. Behind it, Kevin Ceccon was trapped by Nathanaël Berthon and Daniel Abt and there was a collision in which Ceccon's car rose and overturned. Ceccon slipped into the rear of Quaife-Hobbs and the race was over for both of them. After the collision with Ceccon, Abt radioed that his vehicle was damaged and made a pit stop. Since the start-finish straight had to be cleared of debris, the field was led through the pit lane.
After the fourth lap, the race was released again.
Sprint race
Tom Dillmann started the race from pole position - but retired after the 14th lap. Jon Lancaster , still runner-up after qualifying, ultimately won the sprint race. The fastest lap in the race was set by James Calado on lap seven.
