Reports
background
From this run Ma Qinghua was replaced by Alexander Rossi . At Hilmer Motorsport, Conor Daly was replaced by Robin Frijns . Rossi and Frijns previously competed in the Formula Renault 3.5 - Frijns was champion in this series, Rossi eleventh.
There was no former winner of this race.
training
In free practice, Fabio Leimer set the fastest time ahead of Sam Bird and Stefano Coletti .
Qualifying
Leimer also takes the lead in qualifying. Second fastest was Marcus Ericsson , just under a second behind Leimer, ahead of Felipe Nasr .
After qualifying, two penalties were issued: Kevin Giovesi was punished by Johnny Cecotto Jr. for handicapping . Shifted 3 positions back and Sergio Canamasas was excluded from the ranking because of an "intentional change of direction that disadvantaged another driver".
James Calado was relegated ten positions down due to a penalty from the sprint race at Sepang.
Main race
Ericsson stalled the engine at the start of the warm-up lap. He was then pushed into the pits, from where he started after the field.
The start of the race went well for Leimer and he kept the lead. Behind it there were several changes of position. Coletti overtook Nasr and took second place. Bird started from ninth place and improved to third. The loser from the start was Simon Trummer , who lost many positions.
On the first lap, Coletti put the leader under pressure. However, there was no overtaking maneuver. Jolyon Palmer , who started the race from twelfth place, improved to fifth. Meanwhile Daniël de Jong had to finish the race in the pit lane.
After the field had stretched a little, Leimer began to build a lead on Coletti. At the end of the fourth lap, Pål Varhaug parked his car with a technical problem. At the end of the sixth lap, Stéphane Richelmi was the first driver to come in for his stop. He switched from the soft to the hard tires. Canamasas had meanwhile received a drive-through penalty for pushing Calado off the track. Two laps after Richelmi, Nasr and Bird pitted at the same time. Both stops did not go optimally. They came out of the box in the same order but fell behind Richelmi.
Two laps later, the two leaders made their pit stop on the same lap. Their pit stops went smoothly and Leimer stayed in front of Coletti. The latter came back on track just before Rossi, who had also already completed his pit stop. In the meantime, Nasr posted fast lap times and improved two positions over Bird and Richelmi. Nathanaël Berthon had exceeded the speed limit in the pit lane during his pit stop and received a drive-through penalty .
There were still a few drivers who started with the hard tires and made their stops later. Leading was Adrian Quaife-Hobbs , who, however, continuously forfeited time against Leimer and thus did not go for the win. Behind Leimer were Coletti and Rossi, who both benefited from the upcoming overtaking maneuvers and were catching up.
With 16 laps to go, Tom Dillmann was the first of those who started with the hard tires to go into the pits. His lap times were immediately much faster. Quaife-Hobbs also came to the pit stop a little later and picked up the soft tires.
On lap 20 there was a collision between Frijns and Richelmi. For Richelmi it meant the end of the race, Frijns was able to continue and fell back to last place after an additional pit stop. In addition, he received a drive-through penalty for causing the collision.
A curiosity arose shortly before the end of the race: Giovesi had pushed Mitch Evans off the track. Instead of Giovesi, however, teammate René Binder was accidentally punished for the offense.
In the meantime, Dillmann and Quaife-Hobbs were faster than Simon Trummer , who was in seventh place, and overtook him. Then they made up time on Bird. Until the end of the race, however, they were no longer within striking distance.
Leimer won the race ahead of Coletti and debutant Rossi. Julian Leal drove the fastest lap of the race. However, since he was not placed in the top ten, the points for the fastest lap went to Cecotto.
Sprint race
Dillmann started well from pole position and kept the lead over his teammate Bird after the first two corners. Coletti also started well from seventh position and positioned himself outside when braking into the first corner in order to then have an advantage in the next corner. He succeeded and improved to third place.
There were two collisions in the first corner. Rio Haryanto drove Ericsson in the rear and lost the front wing. For Ericsson, the collision meant the end of the race as his rear wing was damaged. Furthermore, there was contact between Rossi and Leimer. While Leimer's car remained largely undamaged, Rossi had to go to the pits to pick up a new front wing.
During the first lap, Bird put Dillmann under pressure and overtook him in the last corner.
After the first lap, Bird was ahead of Dillmann, Coletti, Quaife-Hobbs, Nasr and Leimer.
When braking into the first corner, Dillmann tried to counter Bird's attack and attempted to overtake. Bird kept the lead, but Dillmann lost momentum during the maneuver and had to let Coletti overtake him. Shortly afterwards, Nasr overtook Quaife-Hobbs and then Dillmann.
Quaife-Hobbs set worse lap times than the drivers in front of and behind him, so that the pursuers soon caught up. Dillmann was also unable to keep up with the leaders and a large gap formed in front of him.
Four laps to go, Quaife-Hobbs had four drivers close behind them: Palmer in front of Calado, Leimer and Daniel Abt . Bird, Coletti and Nasr also drove close together at the front.
Meanwhile, Coletti had problems with his vehicle and had to let Nasr pass. In addition, Coletti could not keep up. Abt made up two positions against Leimer and Quaife-Hobbs and then finished seventh. On the start-finish straight, Calado sat down to the left of Palmer. Both drove parallel through the first corner. Calado had an advantage in the subsequent left turn and took fifth position.
On the last lap, Nasr had pulled up close to Bird. When braking into the last corner, he tried an overtaking maneuver and both drove side by side towards the corner. Bird accelerated better and won the race with eight hundredths of a second ahead of Nasr. They were followed by Coletti, Dillmann, Calado and Palmer. Berthon set the fastest lap of the race but was not in the top 10, so the fastest lap went to Bird.
