training
In free practice, Leimer set the fastest lap time, followed by Robin Frijns and James Calado .
Qualifying
At the beginning of the qualifying session, dark clouds hung over the track, so that when the pit lights switched to green, all drivers drove straight out. Marcus Ericsson set the fastest time before the rain started and made it impossible for the other drivers to improve.
He secured pole position ahead of Bird and Nasr.
Main race
Bird didn't start well and immediately lost a position to Nasr, then another to Coletti. Ericsson kept the lead. In the following corners, Ericsson and Nasr dueled, in which Ericsson pushed Nasr off the track and they both lost momentum. Coletti then had to brake, which Bird took advantage of and made an attempt to overtake. Ericsson and Nasr had to drive a wide line, which opened a gap inside, which Bird used to get past all three drivers at the same time and take the lead. Coletti, who initially did not benefit from the confrontation between Ericsson and Nasr, overtook both of them on the first lap and was second behind Bird. Ericsson received a drive-through penalty for pushing Nasr away during the race .
After the first lap, Bird was leading ahead of Coletti, Ericsson, Nasr, Stéphane Richelmi and Mitch Evans .
While the gaps at the front of the field increased, there was a contact between Alexander Rossi and Kevin Ceccon on the third lap and Ceccon spun. His engine stopped and his race ended. Rossi was punished for this action with a backward transfer by ten starting positions in the sprint race.
In the further course of the first laps, Ericsson caught up with Coletti and Richelmi with Nasr. Coletti and Nasr then came right in on the first lap of the pit stop, as did Calado. Bird and Ericsson came to their stop a lap later. Ericsson came out ahead of Coletti, who then overtook him. Then Ericsson started his drive-through penalty, which dropped him out of the points.
Bird was behind Crestani after his stop, which enabled Coletti to catch up. A short time later, Bird managed to get past Crestani, Coletti was now directly behind him and lost time. In the further course, those who had already made their stop lost time because they got stuck behind slower drivers who had not yet made their pit stop. Meanwhile Evans led the field and gradually increased his lead.
Richelmi came out in eighth after his stop, Evans came back on the track in third just ahead of Coletti, with whom he then dueled. Shortly afterwards, however, Evans received a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for driving too fast in the pit lane. Meanwhile, there was a collision between Jon Lancaster and Calado, whereupon Calado spun but was able to continue the race. In the meantime, Nasr gave up the race in the pit lane.
While Richelmi was overtaking Coletti, Tom Dillmann had delayed his pit stop the longest and was leading the race. With ten laps to go, he turned into the pit lane and came back on track in sixth. With the fresh tires he set fast lap times straight away and overtook Palmer and Leimer. He also quickly narrowed the gap to Coletti and a duel for the final podium took place. Dillman drove after Coletti for laps and made several attempts to overtake. Leimer and Palmer had meanwhile caught up, but were unable to attempt overtaking. On the penultimate lap, Coletti braked in the chicane in front of the start-finish straight and had to let Dillmann pass, who immediately pulled out a gap. Leimer was right behind Coletti, putting pressure on him. There was a collision between the two on the final lap, with Coletti damaging his car and ending the race. Leimer was punished for this with a backward transfer by ten starting positions in the sprint race.
Bird won ahead of Richelmi and Dillmann. Dillmann also got two points for the fastest lap.
Sprint race
Julian Leal started from pole position and lost several positions at the start. Lancaster started well from fourth position and took the lead ahead of Rio Haryanto and Calado. He built on this in the first few laps before the safety car hit the track. This was necessary because Daniel Abt had lost control of his Dallara and had stopped in the middle of the road after a spin.
After the safety car phase, Lancaster pulled away again. Behind it there was a duel between Rossi and Rosenzweig. Nasr, who drove behind the two, took advantage of this duel and overtook both in one maneuver.
A little later, Nasr's teammate Palmer also made up positions. During the overtaking maneuver against Canamasas, however, there was contact, with Canamasas damaging the front wing. Canamasas then pitted and came back lapped just before Palmer. While Coletti defended himself against Adrian Quaife-Hobbs , Canamasas caught up with this duel and wanted to round back. Palmer behind was about to overtake Canamasas. However, since he was not shown any blue flags, he did not let him pass. Palmer tried to overtake and sat next to Canamasas, who overlooked him and caused a collision. The race was over for Palmer. Canamasas was able to continue his race but received a 10-second stop-and-go penalty.
Meanwhile, Dillmann was in fifth position. His team-mate Bird caught up at the end of the race and Dillmann let him pass without a fight. Nasr also caught up with Dillmann and put him under pressure. Dillmann struggled this time and Nasr couldn't find a way past him until the end of the race.
Lancaster won the race ahead of Haryanto and Calado. It was Lancaster's first win in a GP2 race. He also got two extra points for the fastest lap of the race.
