training
In free practice, Nasr set the fastest time ahead of James Calado and Johnny Cecotto Jr.
Qualifying
Shortly before qualifying started, dark clouds hung over the track. All drivers lined up at the pit exit long before the session began. When the traffic light turned green, all drivers set a time. Marcus Ericsson initially drove the fastest lap.
This seemed almost enough for the pole position, until shortly before the end team mate Stéphane Richelmi undercut the time. However, Ericsson was also on his fast lap and once again undercut his team-mates. Ericsson thus secured pole position in front of Richelmi and Nasr.
Main race
Ericsson started well while Richelmi lost one position to Coletti. In the first lap he lost another position to Nasr. Leimer had a collision with Calado and Sam Bird at the start and at the end of the first lap had to go into the pits to change his front wing. Calado also came to the pits and gave up the race there.
There was an accident on lap five. Sergio Canamasas and Tom Dillmann fought for a position, which Nathanaël Berthon caught up. When braking into Turn 10, Berthon braked later than the two in front and drove both drivers into the rear. Berthon's car was thrown forward by the rear tires of the other two. Berthon finished the race in the gravel and Canamasas in the pit lane with the rear wing torn off. Dillmann's vehicle suffered no damage, he continued the race. Berthon got a ten position back in the sprint race for causing this accident.
When the pit stop window opened, Robin Frijns , Jolyon Palmer and Alexander Rossi came in straight away. Your direct competitors, Ericsson and Bird, stayed outside for the time being. When they too had made their pit stop, they fell behind the trio. Kevin Ceccon , Cecotto and Dillmann stayed out longer and led the race.
Ceccon's lap times slowed steadily so that he came in first of the trio. There was a collision on lap eleven: In the last chicane, several vehicles drove side by side. Ericsson had positioned himself between Palmer and Bird. As the gap narrowed, Bird and Ericsson came into contact, causing the suspension of Ericsson's Dallara to be damaged and he had to end the race.
Meanwhile, Cecotto was leading Dillmann and Mitch Evans . Frijns in fourth position was the first driver to have already completed his pit stop and was 20 seconds behind Cecotto.
When Dillmann came to a stop, he switched to the hard tire compound again. He drove fast lap times and caught up with Richelmi. However, this forced Dillmann to turn, for which he was later punished. Dillmann then continued to drive fast laps and was able to make up several positions.
Nasr was also fast, first overtaking Coletti and then Palmer. Palmer was about to lose another position to Bird, which he was defending. There was a contact between the two, with Bird turning and having to end the race. Dillmann overtook Coletti and Lancaster on the following lap. When he started an overtaking maneuver against Palmer shortly afterwards, he got too far off the track and had to give up his positions.
Frijns won the race ahead of Nasr Palmer and Dillmann. Since Palmer was charged with a 20-second penalty after the race for pushing Bird away, Lancaster took third place, while Palmer was classified as tenth.
Sprint race
At the start, Dillmann stalled the engine and stopped - all the drivers behind him managed to avoid it. Coletti and Frijns both started well and were in second and third position after the first corner. Coletti immediately put Cecotto under pressure and overtook him at the exit of turn 3. Frijns and Nasr were fighting for third position. In turn 9, Cecotto slipped briefly and had to drive behind the barrier. Frijns and Nasr seize this opportunity and overtake him.
After the first lap, Coletti was leading ahead of Frijns, Nasr, Cecotto, Palmer and Rossi.
In the following laps there was no change of position at the sprayer of the field and the distances between the drivers increased. Dillmann changed tires halfway through the race because his were wearing off. As a result, he drove the fastest lap of the race, which was not rewarded with the two extra points for the fastest lap because he did not finish the race in the top ten.
On the penultimate lap there was a collision that changed the midfield: While Cecotto had previously been driving slow lap times and many drivers had backed up behind him, Canamasas had overtaken several drivers until he was finally behind Cecotto. Meanwhile, Rossi lost positions to Daniel Abt and Rio Haryanto . Canamasas attempted to overtake Cecotto by taking a narrower line at Turn 12 and driving next to Cecotto at the exit of the corner. On the short straight that followed, Cecotto pulled further to the right and caused a contact. Both drivers lost momentum, which enabled Abt and Haryanto to attempt overtaking on their part. Haryanto braked later than Canamasas in turn 14 and drove into the rear, with Canamasas losing the rear wing and Haryanto the front wing. In order to avoid a collision, Abt braked hard to get past the cars of Haryanto and Canamasas. The drivers behind it use the run-off area to avoid the scene of the accident, which means that Abt lost several positions.
Abt fell behind his teammate Calado. Shortly after overtaking his teammate back, Leal made contact and as a result collided with the barrier. Lancaster and Leimer also touched and both slipped off the racing line , allowing Abbot to overtake both of them at the same time and take the last point.
Coletti won the race ahead of Frijns and Nasr. The other points went to Palmer, Cecotto, Rossi, Ceccon and Abt. Coletti got the points for the fastest lap.
Following the race, Haryanto was fined for causing a collision by being displaced ten places in subsequent races in Monaco.
