Bob Bell

Robert "Bob" Bell (born April 10, 1958 in Belfast , Northern Ireland ) is a British engineer and manager. From 2011 to 2013 Bell was technical director at the Formula 1 racing team Mercedes Grand Prix . Before that he was Technical Director of the Chassis Department from 2003 to 2010 and Team Principal at Renault F1 from September 2009 to the beginning of 2010 .

Career

Bell studied aerodynamics and initially worked in the aviation sector . However, he was soon looking for an area where he could observe the progress and development of his work more directly - for example in automobile racing .

Bell switched to Formula 1 , where he worked for McLaren from 1982 and was responsible for research and development . He was also involved in future projects for the English racing car manufacturer (e.g. the “Maverick” record car that was never used). From 1997 to 1999 he worked as an aerodynamicist for the Benetton Formula 1 team before moving to Jordan for a year . In 2001 Bell returned to his old place of work at Benetton. When the team was taken over by Renault that same year, he stayed on board. In 2003 , the Northern Irishman was promoted to the position of technical director of the team that was able to win the world championships in the drivers 'and constructors' championships in 2005 and 2006 under his leadership. On September 23, 2009, Bob Bell succeeded the dismissed Flavio Briatore as team boss of Renault F1. On January 5, 2010, the French Éric Boullier succeeded Bell as team boss, Bell initially continued to hold the role of technical director in the team.

From April 1, 2011, he took over the position of technical director at Mercedes Grand Prix , which he held until December 2013.
