Éric René Boullier (born November 9, 1973 in Laval (Mayenne) ) is a French motorsport engineer and manager. In Formula 1 , he was initially team boss of the Renault team , which later became the Lotus F1 Team , and the vice-president of the Formula 1 team association FOTA . Then he was race director of the Formula 1 team McLaren .

Career

Boullier is a graduate of the Institut polytechnique des sciences avancées , where he studied aeronautics and space travel. From 1999 to 2001 he was a racing engineer at DAMS in Formula 3000 . In 2002 he took over the position of chief engineer of the Spanish racing team Racing Engineering . At the beginning of 2003 he moved to the French DAMS team to take on the position of technical director - including running the A1 Team France team .

At the end of 2008 Boullier became CEO of Gravity Sport Management where he was responsible for many drivers - including Ho-Pin Tung , Adrien Tambay , Jérôme D'Ambrosio and Christian Vietoris .

After the Formula 1 season in 2009 , the Renault team was taken over by the Luxembourg investment company Genii Capital . One of the leading figures there is Gerard Lopez - who is also one of the most important men at Gravity Sport. On January 5, 2010, Boullier was appointed the new team boss, although he had not previously worked in Formula 1. The new Renault team finished the 2010 season in the constructors' championship with 5th place. The team, which has now been renamed Lotus Renault GP, achieved the same place in 2011. In 2012 and 2013, Boullier continued to be team leader of the team, which was renamed Lotus F1 Team.

In January 2014, Boullier left the financially troubled Lotus racing team and switched to rival McLaren as race director. He resigned from this post in early July 2018.
