Phenazepam is a drug from the group of benzodiazepines .
Phenazepam was developed in the Soviet Union and is still produced today in Russia and neighboring countries. Phenazepam is used for neurological disorders such as epilepsy , but also as an antidote for alcohol withdrawal symptoms and insomnia. It is also used as a premedication in surgical interventions, as it increases the effect of the anesthetic and, like most benzodiazepines, has an anxiolytic (anxiolytic) effect. In Germany, phenazepam is not used in pharmacy, but has appeared as a designer drug.
Side effects
Common side effects are nausea, ataxia, and drowsiness. Similar to other benzodiazepines, sudden discontinuation after long-term therapy is associated with severe withdrawal symptoms.
Legal status
Phenazepam does not appear in legislation in either the USA or Great Britain, although benzodiazepines are subject to strict controls in these countries. According to official information, the pilot of Crossair Flight 498 under the influence of phenazepam could have caused the plane to crash.
