FBW B51U
FBW B51U is an omnibus model from the house of the then vehicle manufacturer Franz Brozincevic in Wetzikon , which was primarily designed and further developed for the Basel transport company .

First construction lot 30-39
Standard buses of this type were procured for the first time in 1957 and 1958. They were co-manufactured by Schindler Waggon in Pratteln , which had gained experience in the construction of self-supporting road vehicles by co-manufacturing trolley buses . The first FBW B51U vehicles were equipped with sand spreading devices in front of the drive wheels, Nova starters and central lubrication.

Second construction lot 40
A further development of this construction was the single copy with the road number 40, which was procured in 1958 by a parliamentary resolution of May 12, 1955. This car, whose whereabouts are unknown, also contained a Nova starter, central lubrication and sand spreading devices in front of the drive wheels. The self-supporting body was made of aluminum in a riveted tubular construction by Reinbolt & Christe, which was the last supplier to BVB at the time.

Third construction lot 41-47
In 1960 and 1961, too, the Basel public transport company needed new buses, and the decision was made again to use the FBW B51U system, which has since been further developed. The car 43 of the number block 41-47 was prepared as a prototype for a new automatic door system, which since then can be operated by passengers at the push of a button. This made a one-man operation possible. From 1968 this automatic was installed in all cars. By dismantling the ticket booths, space was gained for two additional seats.
From June 1966, a transistor loudspeaker system was also tested in car 43.
Around 1968 a compressed air steering aid from the Alex system was also installed. In 1978 and 1979 the roof and rear billboards were installed. Radiotelephony connections between the chauffeurs and the operations control center have existed since 1980 and 1981.
Fourth construction lot 48-52
In 1965, 5 more vehicles of the FBW B51U system were added to the regular bus service of the Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe . They were given road numbers 48-52. The reason for this procurement was the new construction of the Johanniterbrücke and the associated closure of the local tram line 2 between the Schützenhaus and the Badischer Bahnhof, the entire route of which was a ring line at the time. As early as 1962, the Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe applied for a loan of 3 million Swiss francs from parliament for the procurement of 15 buses. 5 vehicles were provided for the new, provisional bus line and 10 for line 36, which was then to be extended. The request failed due to a referendum, and 3 years later “only” 5 vehicles were put into operation.
The then brand new car 48 was exhibited at the Swiss sample fair in 1965 . In 1983 it was converted into a tow vehicle for damaged buses and emergency vehicles. He also received a de-icer for the removal of ice on trolley - trolley lines that looks visually the same as the current collector of trolleybuses . It remained in the possession of the Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe as a company car , while its conspecifics were cannibalized, demolished or sold as spare parts donors on the occasion of the acquisition of the articulated buses of the Mercedes-Benz O 305 G series .

The buses acquired in 1966 and 1967 were intended for the then completed ring route 36. There they were replaced by the articulated buses 701-721 of the Mercedes-Benz O 305 G series and were then mainly used on route 37, but also on routes 32 and 38. Line 37 was then an overland line that ran from the Schifflände via Binningen and Bottmingen to the Jakobsberg.

Sixth construction lot 67
Car 67 was initially rented as a test vehicle for various technical innovations by the Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe and later bought. It contained an automatic gearbox that was dismantled at the beginning of 1968 and replaced by a conventional FBW PG51 planetary gearbox. Instead of the overdrive transmission used on the previous FBW B51U for the overland route 37, this bus received an FBW SP131 planetary overdrive transmission. It also contained a Nova starter, air suspension and damping from Schindler Waggon , recirculating ball power steering from the ZF Gemmer system, central lubrication and a sand spreader in front of the drive wheels.

Seventh construction lot 68-77
In the late 1960s, the Saurer 4 ZP had to be replaced with the road numbers 13-22. It was decided to use more FBW B51U, this time with the numbers 68-77. Car 71 retired in April 1997 after a gearbox damage and then served as a spare parts donor. The other buses in this lot remained in operation until they were exported to Romania through an intermediary in 2000 .
