The city of Vance is located in the two counties Tuscaloosa and Bibb in the US state of Alabama . It gained fame as the location of the plant of the Daimler subsidiary Mercedes-Benz US International , where the Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) GLE , GLE Coupé and GLS and, since 2014, the C-Class for the North American market are manufactured. In general, the location of the plant is associated with the neighboring and much larger city of Tuscaloosa .
Vance was founded in 1830 by David M. Lindley , then still under the name Trion . From 1872 the place was called Smallwood, named after the sawmill owner Charles Smallwood. It wasn't until 1879 that the parish was renamed Vance, in memory of Dr. William Vance from North Carolina .
