features
The fur of the soot information is gray or gray-brown on the upper side, the underside is lighter. The hairless face is pink or gray in color, the muzzle is black. There are light cheek hairs on the cheeks. The subspecies C. a. lunulatus has a white colored belly and a white spot on the back of the head. At around 10 kilograms, males are almost twice as heavy as females, who reach around 5.5 kilograms.
distribution and habitat
Soot indications are common in western Africa , the distribution area extends from Senegal to Ghana . The river Sassandra separates the nominate form living to the west of it from the subspecies C. a. lunulatus . The habitat of these animals are forests, often near rivers.
Way of life
These animals are diurnal and mainly stay on the ground. In the trees they look for food mainly in the lower layers. You move on with a four-foot gait. They live in multi-male groups, which can include 20 to 50, occasionally up to 100 animals, but often split up into smaller subgroups.
They are omnivores, but they mainly eat fruits, seeds and other parts of plants. Insects and other small animals complete the menu.
After a gestation period of around 170 days, the female usually gives birth to a single young.
threat
The main threats to soot reporting are habitat loss and hunting. The IUCN lists the species as "endangered" ( vulnerable ). The subspecies C. a. lunulatus applies IUCN as "critically endangered" ( endangered ).
Systematics
The soot specification is one of six types into which the genus of the white-eyed mangaben ( Cercocebus ) is divided today. It used to be considered a subspecies of the collar indication. The subspecies C. a. lunulatus , which differs quite clearly from the nominate form, is, in the opinion of some researchers, a separate species ( white nape indication / white apex indication).
