The Sassandra is a river in the west of the Ivory Coast . It is the second largest river in terms of its catchment area and the largest river in terms of runoff in the Ivory Coast.

course

The information about the origin is different. In some sources it is formed from the Tienba (Tyemba), which rises in the highlands in the north of the Ivory Coast (between Odienné and Boundiali ), and the Gouan (also known as Bafing Sud), which has its origin in the west in the mountains of Guinea . In others, the source river is the Feredougouda, which rises in Guinea and is named Sassandra after the mouth of the Boa.

The Sassandra flows in a south-southeast direction towards the Atlantic. The Buyo Dam was constructed over the middle extension of the river in 1980, below the confluence with the Nzo . The reservoir that was created is called Buyo Lake . The Davo flows into the Sassandra just before it flows into the sea. The city of Sassandra is located on the coast where the river meets the sea. The length of the river is about 650 kilometers.

Hydrometry

The flow rate of the river was measured in Soubre at around 80% of the catchment area in m³ / s

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Sassandra has a size of about 75,000 km². Of this, 67,000 km² are in the Ivory Coast. This corresponds to just over 20% of the country's area.
