Sassandra is a city in the Bas-Sassandra district of Ivory Coast and also the capital of the department of the same name.
geography
The city is located on the Gulf of Guinea at the mouth of the Sassandra River.
history
Sassandra was founded as São Andrea by the Portuguese, the first to explore the Gulf of Guinea . The colonial ruins can still be seen today. The port was later used by the British and French for timber exports. The city literally died out in the 1960s after the port of San-Pédro was completed.
