The Sierra Leone River is a river or estuary in Sierra Leone .
It forms from the confluence of the Rokel and Bankasoka (Port Loko Creek) about 40 kilometers upstream of its confluence with the Atlantic at Freetown . The 2950 square kilometer area has been under the protection of the Ramsar Convention since 1999 .
The Sierra Leone River is between six and 16 kilometers wide and about 40 kilometers long. The port of Freetown is located at its confluence with the Atlantic , and the port of Pepel is a few kilometers inland .
The construction of a bridge ( Lungi Bridge ) between Freetown in the south and Lungi in the north has been planned since September 2018. This should make the planned new construction of the Mamamah International Airport obsolete.
