The Mamamah International Airport , also Sierra Leone Airport or (New) Freetown International Airport, was an international airport in Sierra Leone, planned in 1973 and then since 2012 and under construction from March 2018 until the closure in June 2018 . It was to be built south of Mamamah (mi. 38, Port Loko District ), 55 kilometers from the capital, Freetown .
In June 2018, the new President of Sierra Leones announced the discontinuation of the construction project. Instead, Lungi International Airport is to be further expanded and a bridge ( Lungi Bridge ) is to be built over the Sierra Leone River . Construction of the airport was finally canceled in October 2018. The discontinuation of the project has been controversial since then.
background
The airport should the north of Freetown on the other side of the Sierra Leone River located Lungi International Airport replaced after its completion. It will also be administered by the Sierra Leone Airports Authority (SLAA).
Construction planning
The Ministry of Transport and Air Transport awarded the construction contract to the Chinese state-owned company China Railway International Consortium on December 12, 2012 . The construction should initially cost 190 million US dollars . In July 2013, the cost was given as 300 million US dollars, but revised back to 198 million US dollars in January 2014. Completion was planned for 2017. In a possible second construction phase, the airport was to be expanded.
Due to the Ebola fever epidemic , construction was postponed. In June 2016, President Ernest Koroma assured that the construction project would be adhered to. According to the Chinese ambassador, construction should begin in December 2016, but due to the lack of agreements between Sierra Leone and the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund , construction could not begin by February 2017. Plans from March 2018 envisaged completion for 2022 . The construction costs are said to be 318 million US dollars.
Controversy
In April 2016, representatives of the World Bank had already stated that the new airport building was currently not "economically viable". Instead, one should invest in the expansion of the existing airport. The World Bank would finance two ferries for the crossing to Freetown.
