The Lungi Bridge ( English Lungi Bridge ) is a road bridge planned since 2005 over the Sierra Leone River ( Rokel ) in Sierra Leone . This is to connect the capital Freetown in the Western Area Urban district of the Western Area with the Freetown International Airport near Lungi in the Port Loko district in the North West province .

Construction planning

In 2014, an extensive feasibility study was carried out for this , which envisaged completion by 2019 with construction costs of 1.1495 billion US dollars . The project was not pursued until planning resumed in 2018. The bridge is intended to make the construction of the new international airport Mamamah International Airport near Freetown , which has been planned and partially started since 2012, obsolete, as it creates a connection to the existing Freetown International Airport .

The construction was supposed to be carried out by the Chinese PowerChina International Group , but is a controversial discussion due to the high costs and low economic interest. The construction costs are given as up to one billion US dollars.

The tender for the project was published in November 2019 . According to this, the bridge should be around 8 kilometers long with three lanes in each direction and also enable a future rail connection. It should have a lifespan of 120 years and be built within 4-6 years. The construction costs are now given at 1.8 to 2.1 billion US dollars.
