The Lungi International Airport (often Lungi International Airport ) is the international passenger airport of Sierra Leone , in Lungi area. It is the only international airport in the country; it is also a hub for international and regional flights, but not for domestic flights. The Sierra Leone River separates the airport from the capital Freetown . It is managed and operated by the Sierra Leone Airports Authority (SLAA).
At the beginning of 2013, the construction of a new international airport (" Sierra Leone International Airport ") in Freetown became known. The Ministry of Transport and Air Transport awarded the construction contract to the Chinese state-owned company China Railway International Consortium on December 12, 2012 . The construction should cost 190 million US dollars . Construction was stopped by President Julius Maada Bio in June 2018. Instead, a bridge is to be built over the Sierra Leone River.
Infrastructure
Until it was fully renovated at the end of 2012, the airport's infrastructure was very minimalist and did not meet international requirements. Among other things, check-in procedures were carried out completely manually, as computers cannot be used due to the mostly lack of electricity. The security check on baggage and passengers was also carried out manually. Among other things, no luggage scanners were used. Additional safety equipment was purchased in 2015. In addition, a cargo terminal was built in 2017.
Complete renovation
On March 30, 2010, it was announced that a Northern Irish construction company had been contracted to renovate the airport for £ 8 million . These renovation measures were part of the 50th anniversary of Sierra Leone, which was celebrated in 2011. In May 2011, plans to install additional security infrastructure were also announced.
After a construction period of just under two years, the completely refurbished and renovated airport was opened at the end of November 2012. This now corresponds to international standards with automatic security controls, computerized check-in counters as well as lounges, restaurants and other facilities.
