The Sesriem Canyon ( English Sesriem Canyon ) is a canyon of the Tsauchab - Riviers in Namibia .
Over a period of two million years, the Tsauchab, 80 kilometers west of its origin, has eaten the Sesriem Canyon, which is around one kilometer long and up to 30 meters deep, into the sedimentary rock. It's about five million years old.
The name Sesriem is Afrikaans and means six belts in German , because the first settlers of the Dorsland trekkers had to knot six belts that they cut from the skins of oryx antelopes in order to draw water here.
The Sesriem Canyon is only two meters wide in some places. In the further course it becomes flatter and wider, after which it forms a flat river bed with gallery forest , which is also crossed by the slope to Sossusvlei. Today it is a popular tourist destination.
