The Arabuko Sokoke National Park is located in the Arabuko Sokoke Forest on the coast of Kenya , 110 kilometers north of Mombasa .

General

The national park extends with only six square kilometers over a small part of the 420 km² coastal rainforest in East Africa with its large number of endemic mammals, birds and plants. The entire forest was originally placed under protection as Crown Park in 1943. Was mainly to protect six species of birds as well as the 1991 extinction threatened Zanzibar duiker and the Golden trunk pooch reported, a small part as a national park. The attempt to designate a larger part of the forest as a national park failed due to resistance from the population. Various international organizations are working with the Kenya Wildlife Service to preserve the park.

fauna and Flora

There are three forest types in the area, mixed forest, Brachystegia and Cynometra .

The golden elephant dog, Rhynchocyon chrysopygus , an endemic elephant the size of a hare, is the most notable mammal in the forest. The Sokoke ichneumon and the Zanzibar duiker , a species of dwarf antelope, are also found here . Both species are only found here and on Zanzibar . The Sokoke Scops Owl is only found here and in the Usambara Mountains .

Are also common steppe elephants , civet cats , and baboons and Vervet Monkey . The Schlichtbartvogel has its northernmost distribution area here. The park is also known for its amphibian diversity .
