description

Illustration of Brachystegia spiciformis

Brachystegia species grow as unreinforced trees . The alternate leaves arranged on the branches are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The pair of pinnate leaf blades usually contain four to many, rarely two to three pairs of opposite, sessile leaflets . There are glands on the petiole and the leaf rhachis . Stipules are present.

In terminal, simple or compound, racemose inflorescences are usually many flowers together. The flowers each stand over two well-developed bracts that fully enclose the flower bud and remain on the flower during the flowering period. There are none to eleven, usually four to seven bracts , which are usually sepal-like, identical in shape and gradually change their width from wide to narrow towards the inside. There are usually ten stamens available.

The balding and woody legume is flat, oblong to boat-shaped and the upper end is beaked. The legume opens when ripe and the two fruit flaps twist. The seeds are flat.
