Sweetlips (Plectorhinchinae) are a subfamily of the Haemulidae from the order of the grunts and snapper (Lutjaniformes). They live in the Indian Ocean , the western Pacific and the eastern Atlantic .

features

They are relatively large, 35 centimeters to over a meter long fish, with large heads and large, bulging lips. Their teeth are small and conical, pharynx teeth are present. The caudal fin is only slightly notched or rounded. Sweetlips are often conspicuously colored with white and yellow base and fin colors and yellow and black vertical stripes and spots. The young fish are colored completely differently in many species.

The sister group of the sweetlips are the grunts (Haemulinae), from which they differ by a longer dorsal fin , with 17 to 26 fin rays in the soft-rayed part.

Way of life

They swim with characteristic snaking movements, are nocturnal and are inactive under overhangs during the day. At night they go in search of their food consisting of bottom-dwelling invertebrates .
