The black spotted sweetlip ( Plectorhinchus gaterinus ) lives in the Red Sea and the western Indian Ocean from the Gulf of Oman to the coast of South Africa , the Comoros and Mauritius .

Young fish of the black-spotted sweetlip have a remaining basic color with black vertical stripes and a yellow belly and fins. The adult fish are of the same basic color, the stripes have dissolved into small spots that cover the flanks, back, dorsal, anal and ventral fins. The fins are yellow in color. The front part of the head is gray-blue. They become 50 centimeters long.

Young fish are solitary animals that live hidden among corals. The adult fish live in small groups or large schools. They eat benthic invertebrates .
