Nadine Beiler won the casting and represented Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest 2011, in which she reached 18th place.

concept

A few weeks after the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 , the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation decided that Austria would participate in the Eurovision Song Contest again in 2011.

In mid-October 2010 a concept was announced for how a candidate should be found. In the first phase, the radio station Ö3 searched under the title Guten Morgen Düsseldorf! between the end of October 2010 and the beginning of December for possible representatives, at the same time the casting show Heroes of Tomorrow , which runs in parallel, should play a role. Any musician who found more than 32 supporters for his candidacy could be nominated by December 10, 2010.

From these around 200 nominations, Ö3 selected 30 candidates. The ten best applications, which were presented on February 25, 2011 in a live show on ORF eins , were selected by SMS voting and a simultaneous jury decision from January 3, 2011 .

decision

Phase 1: nomination

Well-known musicians such as the Starmania winners Oliver Wimmer and Nadine Beiler, the participants in the Ö3 Soundcheck Leo Aberer and Eva K. Anderson, and the dialect musicians Bluatschink and Holstuonarmusigbigbandclub were nominated for the internet voting . In addition, former participants such as Waterloo , Robinson and Alf Poier took part. As expected, some applications also came from the Heroes of Tomorrow show . After the applicants had been announced, they had to present their song for the song contest to those responsible at Ö3 by mid-December, otherwise progress in the SMS voting was not possible. When the expert jury determined the 30 participants in the SMS voting, some prominent names were therefore not taken into account. The band Holstuonarmusigbigbandclub stated that they decided against taking part despite the nomination by fans.

There was also the possibility of nominating individual songs. How these should be included in the preliminary decision, however, was not disclosed. Eventually these efforts were abandoned.

Phase 2: SMS voting

The following candidates were presented as part of the Ö3-Wecker radio program under the title "Good Morning Düsseldorf - The Ö3-Wecker rocks the Song Contest" and could be selected by the listeners in January 2011 via SMS. At the beginning of this phase, the jury deposited its ranking of the candidates. Including the jury evaluation, the first ten artists were able to qualify for the live show on February 25, 2011. The rating of the SMS voting was added from 1st to 30th place and the jury's vote from 1st to 30th place. The 10 candidates with the fewest points have thus qualified. In the event of a tie, the audience's voting was rated higher.

The title “Düsseldorf we're coming!” Was introduced for the TV show. On the show, the first ten competed against each other with their songs. Mirjam Weichselbraun conducted the interviews with the candidates immediately after their respective performances, while Robert Kratky asked prominent supporters about the preliminary decision and Andi Knoll determined the current condition of the musicians in the so-called Green Room , where the other applicants were staying. With the first starting number bandWG , due to a technical defect, only the vocals could be heard at the beginning, which is why the performance had to be repeated at the end of the first broadcast. Then the audience decided by SMS and phone call. Then the three finalists were allowed to face the public again. It was won by the soul singer and former Starmania participant Nadine Beiler in front of the hip-hop group Trackshittaz and the reggae band Klimmstein with her partner Joe Sumner .
