Schiffkowitz , real name: Helmut Röhrling (born December 27, 1946 in Graz ) is an Austrian songwriter , musician and singer .

Life

Helmut Röhrling grew up in Sinabelkirchen and Fürstenfeld . His school days were shaped by the authoritarian structures of that time. His childhood in Sinabelkirchen also provided ideas for his songs. For example, a “ Continental ” billboard was installed across from his house : The song “Continental” tells of his childhood.

In the 1960s, Boris Bukowski brought Schiffkowitz into the band FBI Man , which Alfred Lang (1945–1986) had founded a few years earlier. The group covered songs by The Shadows , The Beatles , The Who , The Rolling Stones and other beat bands. The band FBI Man became the Dirtles and later the Music Machine (1968, with the band members Schiffkowitz, Bukowski, Josef Jandrisits , initially with Erich Reinberger, later with Petrus Wippel and Michael Millner), which soon became an important pop group in the Styria and Burgenland developed. At the same time he began working as a journalist and freelance author for around ten years.

Helmut Röhrling was given the stage name “Schiffkowitz” from Boris Bukowski: Both had passed a construction site where a sign with the name of the responsible architect, Helmut Zsifkovits, was attached. Since he pretended to study architecture at the time and his first names were identical, Bukowski decided to call him that from now on. The spelling was Germanized. The name spread quickly among the fans of his band at the time, Music Machine , so that the name "Röhrling" was soon forgotten and Schiffkowitz also appeared as a solo artist under this name.

From 1978 to 2014 he was a member of STS. During this time he also wrote a book: “We are the ones our parents warned us about” , a reminder of the 1960s, with many interviews with various people who shaped this time to have.

In 2000 his first solo album “Er Selbst” was released, followed in June 2011 as a second “Schiffkowitz”.

Schiffkowitz is very committed to supporting minorities, which is also reflected in his songs, u. a. "Drago" or "international match" becomes clear.

On February 8, 2003, he was made an honorary member of the Austrian Roma Cultural Association . In 2012 he received the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .

After STS left, he was often a guest musician on the stage of other Austrian musicians. In 2018 he went on tour through Austria with his band (including Ulli Bäer ) at the invitation of his former STS band colleague Gert Steinbäcker .
