Peter Cornelius (born January 29, 1951 in Hadersdorf-Weidlingau / Vienna-Penzing , bourgeois Peter Cornelius Korunka ) is an Austrian songwriter and guitarist .

Life

Youth and career start

After finishing school, Cornelius trained as a banker . In 1973 he took part in the ORF's Showchance talent competition and won first place with the song I leb in aner Wolk'n . Then he was a member of the ensemble of the musical Hair , which made guest appearances in Hamburg and Berlin. By 1978 several singles and albums appeared on the Polydor label , of which the title Calafati (1978) was to become famous in a later version.

1980s, breakthrough and change

In 1980 he had success as a pop singer for the first time outside of his home country with the album Der Kaffee ist finished (produced by Michael Cretu ).

In the following year he took part in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest , where he took sixth place among twelve participants with the title Dreamers, Tramps and Clowns .

With the single Du excuse, i know di and the corresponding album Zwei , he finally had his big breakthrough in Germany, which gave him high airplay on German radio stations. The single and album were again produced by Michael Cretu and recorded with the later members of the synth-pop band Moti Special (Michael Cretu, "Tissy" Thiers , Nils Tuxen and "Dicky" Tarrach as well as "Bessy" Besser ).

Subsequent singles, such as Reif für die Insel , Strokes , Sail in the Wind (with Curt Cress on drums), Süchtig and Random were mostly successful. Ripe for the island from 1982 quickly became a household word .

The title You apologize, i know di was recorded by pop singer Bernhard Brink in a high German version. In the course of the 1980s Peter Cornelius established himself as an excellent guitarist and serious songwriter with often thoughtful, critical, but almost never pessimistic lyrics.

1990s, creative break and comeback

1990 appeared Peter Cornelius as a guitarist on the album Back in Vienna by Georg Danzer with. He has also been a member of Michael Cretu's successful Enigma music project since the early 1990s , for which he was nominated for the Grammy as best guitarist. In 1992 the album Cornelius + Cretu was released as a joint project , which was sung entirely in High German and has a rather dark / melancholy tone. The album Lieber heute als Morgen (1993) was followed by a seven-year creative break in his solo career.

It wasn't until 2001 that his much-praised album Lebenszeichen was released . The two follow-up albums Shadow and Light (2003) and Like a Young Dog in High Grass (2006) also received excellent reviews and helped him make his comeback into the top ranks of German-speaking songwriters. In 2005 a live DVD was also released for the 30th stage anniversary, recorded in front of 100,000 spectators at the Danube Island Festival in Vienna. In 2008 he released the album Handschrift and in 2012, after a four-year hiatus, his twenty-first album 12 new 12 .
