Rotzpipn is a band from the Simmering district of Vienna . The name of the band is Austrian , means something like "snot nose" and is a swear word used primarily in relation to children. The band also writes “Rotźpıpn” - with a diacritic on the z and the back tongue vowel / ɯ / taken from the Turkic languages - a tribute to bands like Motörhead and Spın̈al Tap, who also use heavy metal umlauts .

According to their own statements, the group defines itself as the “Simmeringer Milieuvarieté” and treats the life of the Viennese working class in its songs, videos and live shows with humor and mostly with a critical undertone. Rotzpipn are sometimes assigned to new folk music .

history

At the end of 2008, the group, which until then had only existed as a two-person project, was invited by the band Alkbottle to perform in the opening act at the annual “Fett Wia A Christkindl” concert. Although Rotzpipn only played two songs at the time, the positive reactions from the audience brought the musicians Fetz N. Schädl and Zacharias Umpferl to expand the project and look for other musicians to play as a full-fledged rock band in the future.

In 2011 the first album was released ... is worth it! (German: "... is also worth something!"), Which was recorded in the "Fleischerei Mitschke" in Simmering and published under the label "Harlots Music". The album contains mostly songs that can be assigned to the classic Wienerlied but also songs with borrowings from the punk or metal genre . In 2012 the second album Im Pfusch was released on Rough Trade . Didi Baumgartner ( Alkbottle ) was the producer . In comparison to the first album, Im Pfusch is rougher and harder. In 2015 the band released their third album Das Dümmstegericht . The songs got a bit heavier and more Metal-heavy. Nevertheless, the main focus was on the texts.

concept

The group follows an artistic concept in all of its activities. For example, all actors from Rotzpipn use a stage name and pseudo-identities. They speak to each other politely with "Mr.", while otherwise they only use you. Often there are also insults between musicians, audience and fans as well as physical assaults within the band.

The Simmering district is repeatedly portrayed in an exaggeratedly positive manner in order to satirically point out the relativity of patriotism . The actors' statements alternate between understatement and megalomania .

Many clichés of rock music are presented again and again in satirical exaggerated form, the rider of the band describes less the technical requirements of the band; it is rather another satirical swipe at the wishes of some rock stars.

style

Texts

The texts are often in vulgar Viennese and deal with taboo subjects as well as Austrian politics and celebrities. They make use of various rhetorical stylistic devices such as irony, sarcasm, cynicism, archaisms and vulgarisms.

With their songs Würschtlpolka (a critical examination of the politics of various Austrian right-wing parties) and Die Moritat von der Schwarzen Maria (a musical reaction to the deportation of children), Rotzpipn took part in the protest song contest in 2010 and 2011 and each came in third.

In 2012 the band applied for the third time in a row and finally won the ninth protest song contest with Hymne 2.0 (a snappy song about how the world perceives Austria).

music

The group uses different musical styles and stylistic devices. Classical rock riffs or alternating bass lines derived from folk music usually dominate . There are often bar or key changes within a song . Many vocal lines are sung with several voices, in studio recordings the group experiments with unusual instruments or utensils such as beer bottles, boom whackers , glockenspiel or broken accordions. The musicians describe themselves as amateurs and, in live performances, place little value on the correct reproduction of their pieces of music. The band almost exclusively uses cheap musical instruments and undersized amplifiers. Often there are allusions to other bands or musicians in the text and / or music. For example, on the band's first album, the guitarist plays a slightly modified variation of the same solo on most of the songs, which is strongly reminiscent of the guitar solo by Guns'n'Roses guitarist Slash from Knockin 'on Heaven's Door . The line-up of the musicians is variable, in addition to the "core band" (guitars, bass, drums, vocals), guest musicians are often invited to participate in the concerts.
