Athletic career and early years

Bruno Hortelano was born the son of Gonzalo Hortelano and Pina Roig in Wollongong, in the Australian territory of New South Wales . His father was writing his doctoral thesis there. When Hortelano was a year old, his parents moved him and their younger brother to Canada, where they settled in Burlington , Ontario . Hortelano began playing taekwondo and soccer as a child, and American football was added to high school . In Burlington he then went to the local athletics club and also represented his high school, the Assumption Catholic Secondary School, in athletic competitions, which he attended from 2005 to 2009. First, he competed in the 100 and 110 meter hurdles. He has received several awards from his school for his athletic achievements in athletics and football.

In 2009 he enrolled at the renowned Cornell University in Ithaca , in the US state of New York , to specialize in genetics. He also represented the university in the Ivy League , a league in which the best athletes from the US elite universities on the East Coast compete in various sports. In 2014 he graduated from the university with a master’s degree.

At the beginning of July 2010, Hortelano was the Spanish youth champion over 200 meters. Also in July he went to the U20 World Championships in Moncton . There he made the jump to the semi-finals over 200 meters, but could not start there and finished in 21st place. At the U20 European Championships in Ostrava he competed over 100 meters a year later. With a time of 10.74 s, he failed there in seventh place in his semi-final run. In 2012 he competed at the European Championships in Helsinki over 200 meters and with the 4 x 100 meter relay for the first time in an international championship in the adult area. In his semifinals he was eliminated in sixth place, as a season they failed in ninth place just short of making it to the final. At the U23 European Championships in Tampere a year later, Hortelano started again over the same distances and also with the 4 x 400 meter relay. In the final over 200 meters he ran in 20.70 s in 5th place, with the relay he won his first medal at international championships with the bronze medal. Together with the long season he was fifth. At the World Championships in Moscow , Hortelano ran in the 4 x 100 meter relay. As fourth in their run, the quartet just missed the finals, but still ran a Spanish record in 38.46 s.

In 2016, Hortelano also competed at the European Championships in Amsterdam . In the 100 meter final, he finished fourth in 10.12 seconds. Just one day later he celebrated his greatest sporting success to date with the European title in 20.45 s over 200 meters. He also competed over 200 meters at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . As fourth in his semifinal run he failed in 20.16 s, which meant personal best, just about making it into the final. In June before he set a new Spanish record of 10.06 seconds at a meeting in Madrid over 100 meters.

Shortly after the Olympics, Hortelano and his cousin got into a car accident in Madrid in which Hortelano sustained a serious hand injury. After operations and rehabilitation over a period of six months, Hortelano was able to take part in competitions again from 2018. In summer he set Spanish records over 200 and 400 meters within a month and was able to take part in the European Championships in Berlin in August .
