history

The history of the city is linked to the eventful history of Tobago. First mentioned in 1654 as Nieuw- Vlissingen and later as Lampsinburg , named after the shipowner, wholesaler and 1st Baron of Tobago Cornelis Lampsins , Scarborough is a Dutch foundation. Over the next fifteen years, first the British and then the French conquered the island. In 1670 the Dutch were back in power and established the first civil government in Tobago.

It was not until 1762, in the meantime the island had been a French colony for ninety years, that the British recaptured the island and initially chose Georgetown as the seat of government. In 1769 the House of Assembly was relocated to Lampinsburg. In the course of this transfer, Scarborough was given its current name and became the island's seat of government. From 1789 to 1814 the city was called Port Louis, again under French rule. In 1790 the city was almost completely destroyed in a great fire caused by a mutiny by the soldiers and then rebuilt.

traffic

The only two-lane road on the island, the Claude Noel Highway , runs from Scarborough to the airport. The Winward Road leads along the southern coast of Roxborough and on to Charlottesville . The Northside Road leads over Moriah to the north coast and there to Castara , Parlatuvier and L'Anse Fourmi.

From the central bus station in Scarborough there are blue and white painted buses (mostly from the Chinese company Higer Bus ) of the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) . The main routes are: west to Crown Point and Black Rock, east to Charlotteville, and north to Moriah, Castara and L'Anse Fourmi. The tickets are very cheap (between TT $ 3 and TT $ 8) and must be purchased before you start your journey.

The same routes are used by shared taxis - here they are called maxi-taxis , blue-and-white painted minibuses with 8 seats, and route taxis , cars with 4 seats. Both types can be stopped in the open.

About 13 kilometers to the west is the ANR Robinson International Airport with daily connections to Port of Spain and some international flights, including Frankfurt am Main .

The port of Scarborough was expanded as a deep water port in 1991, and a terminal for cruise ships has been built in recent years. At the ferry terminal, there are fast ferries to Port of Spain at least twice a day. The TT Spirit and the TT Express need 2.5 hours for a crossing, which costs TT $ 150 per person (as of 2012).
