The 100-meter run for women at the 1993 World Athletics Championships was held on August 15 and 16, 1993 in the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium in Stuttgart .

In this competition, the US sprinters won two gold and bronze medals.
The 1992 Olympic champion over 100 meters and vice world champion over 100 m hurdles from 1991 Gail Devers , who also won silver here in Stuttgart over 100 m hurdles four days later.
Second place took the Jamaican Merlene Ottey , who at the 1984 Olympics and the world championships in 1987 and 1991 had each won bronze and 200 meters more medals had won: twice World Cup -Bronze ( 1987 /1991), three bronze medals at the Olympic Games ( 1980 / 1984 /1992) and one World Cup is silver ( 1983 ). Here in Stuttgart, three days later, she finally managed to bring a single gold medal to her collection over 200 meters, after having won relay gold in the Jamaica team two years earlier.
The vice world champion over 100 and 200 meters in 1991 and Olympic champion in 1992 over 200 meters and 4 × 100 meters Gwen Torrence , who had also won Olympic silver over 4 × 400 meters in 1992, came third. Here in Stuttgart she won three more medals with gold over 4 × 400 meters, silver over 200 meters and 4 × 100 meters.

The outcome of the finals in this competition was extremely close. With a headwind of 0.3 meters per second, there was only a thousandth of a second between the winner Gail Devers and the vice world champion Merlene Ottey. Both set a new world championship record with their 10.82 seconds.
