The women's 100-meter run at the 1995 World Athletics Championships was held on August 6th and 7th, 1995 in Gothenburg's Ullevi Stadium .
World champion was the US American World Cup runner-up in 1991 and World Cup third in 1993, Gwen Torrence , who was also Olympic champion over 200 meters in 1992 and vice world champion in 1991 and 1993. She had also won several gold and silver medals with the relays of her country over 4 × 100 m and 4 × 400 m at the Olympic Games and World Championships and also won a second World Championship title here in Gothenburg with the 4 × 100 m USA season .
Second place went to Jamaican Merlene Ottey , who won bronze at the 1984 Olympic Games and the 1987 and 1991 World Championships, and silver at the 1993 World Championships. Also about 200 meters she won more medals: one World Cup -Gold (1993), one World Cup is silver ( 1983 ), twice World Cup -Bronze ( 1987 /1991) and three bronze medals at the Olympic Games ( 1980 / 1984 /1992). In addition, she had won one World Cup gold and two World Cup gold bronze with her 4 x 100 meter relay. Here in Gothenburg she defended her title as world champion over 200 meters three days later and on the final day she won bronze with her sprint relay.
Bronze went to the Russian Olympic bronze medalist in 1992 ( starting for the United Team at the time ) and reigning European champion Irina Priwalowa . She was also reigning European champion over 200 meters and had won Olympic gold in 1992 with the 4 x 100 meter relay of the United Team.

The existing world championship record was not set and not improved at these world championships.
The US world champion Gwen Torrence only just missed the record - in the final by only three and in the semifinals by only two hundredths of a second. The silver medalist Merlene Ottey from Jamaica also stayed in the semifinals only three hundredths of a second above the existing World Cup record, which she had set two years earlier as vice world champion at the same time as the then winner Gail Devers from the United States in the final.

The preliminary round was carried out in eight runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the eight fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the quarter-finals.
