Records
Existing records
World record | 26: 43.53 min | Haile Gebrselassie | Hengelo , Netherlands | June 5, 1995 |
World championship record | 27: 38.63 min | Paul Kipkoech | World Cup 1987 in Rome , Italy | August 29, 1987 |
Record improvement
The existing World Cup record has been improved twice:
- 27: 29.07 min - Josephat Machuka ( Kenya ), 2nd preliminary, 5th August
- 27: 12.95 min - Haile Gebrselassie ( Ethiopia ), final, August 8th
Preliminary round
This year too, with forty athletes, the number of participants was so high that it was necessary to carry out preliminary runs. There were two runs. The first eight athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - and the four fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the quarter-finals.
The athletes who qualified for the finals over their time came from the second race without exception. This was so fast that the winner even set a new World Cup record, which was clearly undercut again in the final.
