The Ullevi Stadium is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Swedish city of Gothenburg . After the Friends Arena, it has the second largest capacity of the Swedish stadiums, namely 43,200 seats for football and athletics events and around 59,000 seats for concerts and similar events, with 25,000 standing space on the lawn and the arena.

history

The stadium constructed by Fritz Jaenecke and Sten Samuelsson was inaugurated as Nya Ullevi ( German  New Ullevi ) for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden; meanwhile the name has been changed to Ullevi . In 1958 the semi-final game between Germany and Sweden was played here (1: 3), as well as the game for third place between France and Germany (6: 3).

At the European Football Championship in 1992, the final between Denmark and Germany took place, which Denmark won 2-0. In 1995 the World Athletics Championships and in 2006 the European Athletics Championships were held in the Ullevi Stadium. In August 2017, the Ullevi was the main stadium of the FEI European Championships in four equestrian disciplines.

In 2005 a renovation of the stadium was completed, in which the audience capacity was reduced to the values given above. After the demolition of the old Gamla Ullevi ( German  Altes Ullevi ) in 2007, the clubs IFK Göteborg and GAIS played their home games here until the completion of the new football stadium of the same name in early 2009 , but the teams play in Ullevi at top games or city derbies. Games of the Swedish national football team also rarely take place. The opening ceremony and the final of the annual Gothia Cup youth soccer tournament are held here.

Before the renovation, a Bruce Springsteen concert in 1985 with 64,312 people holds the audience record , after the renovation a U2 concert with 60,099 people in 2009. On August 22, 2015, Metallica played the largest metal concert ever in front of over 60,000 people in Ullevi took place in Sweden.
