The Gothia Cup is a 1975 organized and annually recurring football tournament for young people between the ages of 11 and 19, organized by the Gothenburg clubs BK Häcken and GAIS , which has been solely responsible for BK Häcken since the early 1980s. In terms of the number of participants, it is the largest football tournament in the world.
Teams from 140 countries have taken part since it was founded. This corresponds to a total of around one million players; the proportion of female players is 30%. The opening ceremony in 2011 saw 51,861, the final games played in the Ullevi Stadium were followed by 28,910 spectators.
Looking back, many (later) professional footballers also emerged from the football tournament. In 2005, an all-star team was formed from the winners' lists dating back 30 years. a. also include Alan Shearer , Alan McInally , Zé Roberto and Andrea Pirlo .

In 1975 the Gothia Cup was held for the first time; 275 teams from 5 countries took part. In 1985 there were 502 teams from 29 countries and in 1995 even 1094 teams from 48 countries. The previous record of 1615 teams from 78 countries from 2012 was exceeded in 2014 - the year of its 40th anniversary - with 1650 teams from 73 countries and 37,400 players.
The most successful team with 27 tournament victories is the IF Brommapojkarna sports club based in the Stockholm district of Bromma . The most successful German teams are FC Teutonia 1919 Weiden with four and BV Werther with three tournament wins. With 20 triumphs, Germany is the third most successful nation behind Sweden (198) and the United States (28).
