Existing records
World record | 1: 41.73 min | Sebastian Coe | Florence , Italy | June 10, 1981 |
World championship record | 1: 43.06 min | Billy Konchellah | World Cup 1987 in Rome , Italy | September 1, 1987 |
The existing world championship record was missed by a long way at these world championships. The races were aimed exclusively at a sprint finish. With the fastest time in the competition, achieved in the final, world champion Wilson Kipketer stayed exactly two seconds above the eight-year-old world championship record.
Preliminary round
The preliminary round was carried out in seven runs. The first two athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the two fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semi-finals.
