The Wilkes amphitheater is a large mountain basin in East Antarctic Victoria Land . It is on the east side of Mount Smith .
Scientists from a 1962 to 1963 campaign as part of the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition named him. The namesake is the New Zealand entomologist and later activist Owen Wilkes (1940-2005), who was involved in this campaign and climbed the north side of the mountain basin.
