The women's 200-meter run at the 1995 World Athletics Championships was held on August 9 and 10, 1995 in Gothenburg's Ullevi Stadium .

The Russian sprinters won two medals in this competition, silver and bronze.
World Champion was the defending champion, two-time World Cup -Bronzemedaillengewinnerin ( 1987 /1991), three-time bronze medalist at the Olympic Games ( 1980 / 1984 /1992) and World Cup -Silbermedaillengewinnerin of 1983 Merlene Ottey of Jamaica . In addition, she had 100 meters at the 1984 Olympic Games and the World Championships 1987 / 1991 respectively bronze and 1993 World Cup won -Silber. In 1991 she had already won the World Cup relay gold in the Jamaica team and had also finished second in the 100 meters here in Gothenburg three days earlier.
At the same time, down to a hundredth of a second, the third place in the World Cup in 1993 was Irina Priwalowa , who was third in the Olympic Games in 1992 - starting for the United Team of the Commonwealth of Independent States - over 100 meters. In 1993, Irina Priwalowa also won gold in the World Cup with her country's 4 x 100 meter relay .

The US 100 meter world champion Gwen Torrence started the race as the favorite . In the end, she was clearly ahead. Her time of 21.77 seconds was exceptionally good given a headwind of 2.2 meters per second. However, she was immediately disqualified - a camera had recorded that she had violated the inner limit of her lane with some steps.
