Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal (born June 14, 1990 in Ålesund ) is a Norwegian medium and long distance runner .

Career

Grøvdal was already very successful as a youngster, especially over the 3000 meter obstacle. In 2006, she finished fifth overall at the Junior World Championships in Beijing at the age of 16. In the following year she won the bronze medal at the youth world championships and brought the gold medal over 3000 meter obstacle at the junior European championships . She set a new European junior record of 9: 44.34 minutes. She was also able to qualify for the World Athletics Championships in Osaka , but failed there in the preliminary round. In 2009 she won gold again at the European Junior Athletics Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia , in what was then her strongest discipline and also gold in the 5000 meters. This year, too, she qualified for the World Championships in Berlin , but was eliminated again in the preliminary round.

In the following years, Grøvdal specialized more and more in flat medium and long distance runs. At the 2010 European Championships in Barcelona , she finished 9th over 5000 meters in the final and eliminated over 10,000 meters in the final. In 2012 she qualified over 5000 meters for the Olympic Games in London , at which she was eliminated in the preliminary round , as at the World Championships in the following year and 2015 .

In 2016 she managed to set new personal bests in all running distances from 1500 to 10,000 meters and qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . There she achieved seventh and ninth places over 5000 and 10,000 meters with new personal bests. In addition, she achieved her first medal in the senior age class at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam in 2016 with third place over 10,000 meters. For the 2017 World Championships in London she was qualified over 1500, 5000 and 10,000 meters, but decided to only start in the two shorter distances. Over 1500 meters, however, she failed in the preliminaries, while she reached the final over 5000 meters, which she could not finish. A few weeks later she improved the national obstacle course record at the Norwegian championships to 9: 13.35 min and was thus classified among the best 25 athletes of all time over this distance, which she had barely contested for years.
