Hanna Elisabeth Klein (born April 6, 1993 in Landau in the Palatinate , Rhineland-Palatinate ) is a German athlete who specializes in medium and long-distance running. Her greatest sporting successes to date are winning the gold medal at the Summer Universiade 2017 in Taipei over 5000 meters and reaching the final over 1500 meters at the 2017 World Championships in London .

career path

Klein graduated from high school in Edenkoben in 2012 . She obtained a bachelor's degree in psychology from the Fernuniversität Hagen and began a master’s degree in Cologne in autumn 2017 .

Athletic career

Hanna Klein trained at LCO Edenkoben since she was eight years old. In 2005, she demonstrated her talent for the 800-meter run when she won the Palatinate Indoor Championships over this distance, ran a Palatinate record at the Rhineland-Palatinate Championships and with a B-student relay over 3 × 800 meters also set a new Palatinate record.

In 2007, Klein took part in a national competition for the first time and came in sixth at the German School All-Around Championships in Lage. In 2008 she became the Rhineland-Palatinate champion over 800 meters as well as champion at the German student all-around championships in Rhede in the block competition run by the students W15. Hanna Klein's season highlight in 2009 was the runner-up in the 800 meters at the German Youth Championships with a new Palatinate record, after which the DLV added her to the C-team .

In 2010 won Klein at the German U20 Indoor Championships with a new personal best in the 800-meter race, in which they also German U18 champion was. In her international competition debut, she qualified with a fifth place in the 1000-meter run in Moscow at the European Youth Olympic Trials . These were the European elimination competition for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore , in which Klein then took seventh place on the 1000-meter course.

In 2011 she became German Vice Hall Champion and German U18 Vice Champion over 800 meters . Internationally, Klein came eighth over this distance at the U20 European Championships . Her greatest success in 2012 was the German U20 championship in the 800 meter run. By the end of her U20 time, Klein had set Palatinate records over 400 and 800 meters as well as in the relay race and had repeatedly become Palatinate Champion.

In 2013 Klein was accepted into the B-team of the German Athletics Association (DLV) . At the German U23 championships she finished third in the 800-meter run and fourth at the German championships . Since 2013, it also denies regular 10-km - road races .

From the 2014 season, Klein preferred to switch to the longer 1,500 meter distance . Here she took fourth place at the German Indoor Championships , was German U23 champion , and achieved fifth place at the German Championships .

In 2015 Klein came third at the German Championships over 1500 meters and reached eighth position at the same distance at the U23 European Championships .

2016 she won in the 1500-meter race again front ranks at the German Indoor Championships with a fourth and the German championship with a seventh place.

In 2017, Klein was also successful on the long haul. At the German Indoor Championships she came in third place with a personal best in the 3000 meter run . By the end of May she was able to set up two more best times and reached the standards for the World Championships in London . First, on May 19 in Karlsruhe, she climbed the 2nd Long Running Night - Runners Track Night by 10 seconds to 15: 17.14 min over 5000 meters, eight days later she won the IFAM in Oordegem (Belgium) with a meeting record of 4 : 06.91 min over 1500 meters.
In
Lille , northern France , Klein became European team champion , to which she contributed by finishing second in the 3,000-meter run . In Erfurt she was then German runner-up in the 5000 meter run. At the World Championships in London , Klein reached the final of 1500 meters, in which she finished eleventh. She was nominated by the General German University Sports Association for the Summer Universiade in Taipei , where she won the gold medal in the 5000 meter run.

In 2018, Klein took silver in the indoor season, both over 1500 m and with the 3 x 800 meter relay. At the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham , she was eliminated over 1500 meters in the preliminary run. On the 5000 m distance, Klein became German champion in Nuremberg . At the European Championships in Berlin , she decided on this route at short notice. Because of pain in the Achilles tendon, she was barely able to complete any speed training before, had a hard struggle in the run and ended the race prematurely.

In 2019 Klein became German indoor champion over 1500 meters. Due to the late timing and the high temperatures, she had not planned a start at the World Championships in Doha in her season planning and wanted to work harder through more races. At the European Team Championships in Bydgoszcz , she came with the team on the 2nd place, to which she contributed by a victory in the 5000-meter run . At the ISTAF Berlin , Klein fulfilled the world championship norm over 5000 meters with a personal season best of 15: 19.74 min and then took part in the world championships, where she reached 11th place (15: 28.64 min) in the run-up, which she did could not qualify for the final.

In 2020 Klein won double gold at the German indoor championships over 1500 and 3000 meters.

From 2013, Klein was a member of the B-team of the German Athletics Association (DLV) . After the competitive sports reform, she was included in the perspective squad (PK) since the 2017/2018 season.

Club affiliations and trainers

In the 2019 season, Klein separated from her previous coach and moved to LAV Stadtwerke Tübingen (parent club: Post-SV Tübingen ) at the end of November 2019 . She has been trained by Isabelle Baumann ( LAV Stadtwerke Tübingen ) since then . Before that, Klein had been at the start for SG Schorndorf since 2015 . Her first club was the LCO Edenkoben until 2012 . In 2013 and 2014 she started for LG Limes-Rems / SV Plüderhausen .
